What are the symptoms of Shingles disease?

June 23, 2023

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus responsible for chickenpox. The primary symptoms of shingles include:

  1. Rash: Shingles typically begins with a painful, red rash that usually appears as a single stripe or band on one side of the body, most commonly on the torso, but it can also affect the face, eyes, or other parts of the body. The rash usually develops into clusters of fluid-filled blisters, which eventually crust over and heal.
  2. Pain: Before the rash appears, many individuals experience pain, tingling, itching, or a burning sensation in the affected area. The pain is often described as intense and may be constant or intermittent.
  3. Sensitivity: The skin in the affected area may become sensitive to touch, and even light pressure or clothing can cause discomfort.
  4. Flu-like symptoms: Some individuals may also experience general symptoms similar to the flu, such as fever, headache, fatigue, and body aches.

It’s important to note that the severity and duration of symptoms can vary from person to person. In some cases, shingles may cause complications, such as postherpetic neuralgia, a condition characterized by persistent nerve pain even after the rash has healed.

If you suspect you have shingles or are experiencing these symptoms, it is recommended to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
