Why Do I Get Heartburn Every Day? An Explanation by Prakob Punmanee (Mr.Hotsia)
For more than 30 years I have traveled across Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, India, and many countries throughout Asia 🌏. My name is Prakob Punmanee (Mr.Hotsia). During these years I have eaten thousands of dishes in local markets, mountain villages, street stalls, and busy cities. From spicy Thai basil stir fry to Indian masala, fermented Lao dishes, Vietnamese noodles, and Myanmar curries, I have seen how strongly food affects our digestive system.
One of the most common complaints I hear from travelers and locals is daily heartburn. Many people ask me:
“Why do I get heartburn every day?”
Daily heartburn is a sign that your body is sending a message. Occasional heartburn is normal, but when it happens every day, something in your lifestyle, diet, or health needs attention. This article explains the possible reasons behind daily heartburn based on medical understanding and my real life experience across Asia.
What Is Heartburn
Heartburn is the burning feeling in the chest caused by stomach acid flowing upward into the esophagus. This happens when the lower esophageal sphincter, a muscle that controls the opening between the stomach and esophagus, relaxes at the wrong time.
Symptoms include:
🔥 Burning in the chest
😖 Sour taste
🤢 Regurgitation
🌙 Worse discomfort at night
😮💨 Pressure in the upper stomach
Heartburn itself is not a disease, but daily heartburn may be a sign of something more serious.
Why You Get Heartburn Every Day
Daily heartburn rarely happens by accident. In most cases something in your routine is causing continuous irritation. Here are the main reasons I have seen during my travels.
1. Eating Too Much Spicy Food
Asia loves spicy food 🌶️. I have eaten countless fiery dishes from papaya salad in Laos to curries in Myanmar and Sri Lanka. Spices irritate the esophagus and increase acid production. If you eat spicy food daily your esophagus has no time to heal which causes daily heartburn.
2. Eating Late at Night
In Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia night markets are everywhere. Many people enjoy meals at midnight or later. If you eat late daily and lie down soon after your stomach pushes acid upward. This is one of the most common causes I have seen in Asia.
3. Large or Heavy Meals
Heavy meals increase stomach pressure. When pressure builds up daily, reflux happens every day. Indian food, Thai fried dishes, and Burmese curries are delicious but often very heavy.
4. Too Much Coffee or Tea
Vietnamese coffee, Thai iced tea, and Indian chai all contain caffeine. Caffeine relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter. If you drink these every day you may get daily heartburn.
During a long trip in Vietnam I drank strong coffee every morning. After a week I noticed daily burning which stopped when I reduced caffeine.
5. Alcohol Consumption
Beer, rice wine, and local spirits irritate the stomach lining and relax the lower esophageal muscle. Alcohol every day often leads to heartburn every day.
6. Smoking
Smoking weakens the muscle that keeps acid in the stomach. It also reduces saliva which normally neutralizes acid. In Myanmar and Laos I met many smokers who had daily heartburn.
7. Stress and Poor Sleep
Traveling taught me that the stomach and the mind are connected. Stress increases acid production and slows digestion. Poor sleep also disrupts the stomach. If you experience stress daily you may also experience heartburn daily.
8. Being Overweight
Extra body weight increases pressure on the stomach and pushes acid upward. This is a common reason for daily heartburn around the world.
9. Eating Too Fast
When you eat fast you swallow more air and your stomach expands quickly. This leads to pressure that causes acid to escape. Many street food environments encourage fast eating which leads to daily symptoms.
10. GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease)
If you have heartburn every day, it may not be simple heartburn anymore. It may be GERD, a chronic form of acid reflux. GERD does not go away on its own and often causes daily or frequent heartburn.
During my travels in Vietnam I met a man who felt burning every night for years. His condition was not occasional reflux. It was GERD.
11. Hiatal Hernia
A hiatal hernia occurs when part of the stomach moves above the diaphragm. This makes acid reflux easier and more frequent.
12. Certain Medications
Some medicines can relax the lower esophageal sphincter or irritate the stomach, causing daily symptoms.
How To Stop Daily Heartburn
When I travel, I use simple but effective habits to prevent heartburn. These habits help people in every country I visit.

Reduces pressure in the stomach.
🌙 Avoid eating late at night
Give your body time to digest.

Especially Vietnamese coffee or Thai tea.
🍺 Reduce alcohol
A major trigger for daily burning.

Prevents nighttime reflux.
When Daily Heartburn Is Dangerous
Daily heartburn should never be ignored. It can be a sign of:
-
Chronic acid reflux
-
Esophagitis
-
GERD
-
Ulcers
-
Long term inflammation
-
Barretts esophagus
If heartburn lasts for weeks or months it may require medical evaluation.
My Personal Story Across Asia
In Laos I once ate spicy fermented dishes every day. By the third day my heartburn appeared daily.
In India heavy curries caused daily discomfort when I ate too much.
In Thailand late night meals caused morning burning until I changed my eating time.
In Vietnam strong coffee caused daily irritation until I reduced the amount.
These real experiences helped me understand daily heartburn better than any textbook.
