Indian Psoriasis Treatment

June 23, 2023

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin condition that affects millions of people worldwide, including in India. While there is no cure for psoriasis, various treatment options are available to manage the symptoms and improve the quality of life for individuals living with the condition.

In India, the treatment approach for psoriasis is similar to international standards and includes a combination of medical treatments, lifestyle modifications, and supportive therapies. Here are some common treatment options used in India for psoriasis:

  1. Topical Medications: Creams, ointments, lotions, and gels containing corticosteroids, vitamin D analogs, coal tar, salicylic acid, and other ingredients can be applied directly to the affected skin to reduce inflammation and control scaling.
  2. Systemic Medications: In more severe cases, oral or injectable medications may be prescribed. These include retinoids, methotrexate, cyclosporine, and newer biologic drugs such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) inhibitors, interleukin-17 (IL-17) inhibitors, and interleukin-23 (IL-23) inhibitors.
  3. Phototherapy: Light therapy, specifically ultraviolet (UV) light, can be an effective treatment for psoriasis. Narrowband UVB therapy and psoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA) therapy are commonly used in India to manage psoriasis symptoms.
  4. Ayurvedic Treatment: Ayurveda, a traditional system of medicine in India, offers alternative treatment options for psoriasis. Herbal medicines, dietary modifications, detoxification procedures, and lifestyle changes are recommended to balance the body’s doshas (energies) and reduce symptoms.
  5. Homeopathy: Homeopathic treatments are also used by some individuals in India to manage psoriasis. These treatments are personalized based on the individual’s symptoms and may involve the use of various natural substances in highly diluted forms.

It is important to note that the choice of treatment depends on the severity and extent of psoriasis, as well as the individual’s overall health and preferences. It is recommended to consult with a dermatologist or healthcare professional experienced in treating psoriasis to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for your specific condition.
